Part of the story happens in New Mexico’s Rio Grande River Valley, but much of it is in the Valle Abajo – a magical, ancient alternative valley – isolated, yet parallel to the world we live in.
Only select individuals can pass into the Valley Abajo from Albuquerque’s South Valley since 1905 up to the present. And only they can lead the peaceful clans of the Valle out of a reign of terror wrought by the scheming, evil Soreyes.
Enter a world of amazing magic, gritty adventure, mystery, and passion through the pages of my Rio Grande Parallax Series:
In The Tower of Il Serrohe, Book I (published 2012) anti-hero Don Vargas, wrenched from a deteriorating lifestyle when his promiscuous wife kicked him out, rents a dilapidated casita which – unknown to him –is actually a Portal to another world. The bat, Nightwing, lures Vargas through that dusty portal on a southwest contemporary quest into the Valle Abajo, where local clanspeople expect him to save them from the wily Soreyes’ and their mysterious Tower.
Complications arise, spawning the dramatic conclusion of Book I.
Five years later, in Extreme Dust Storms May Exist, Book II, Esther, a sixteen-year-old honor student athlete and cousin to Don, suffers a mysterious accident and dreams of a valley much like her Rio Luna home, yet ominously different. When a bat repeatedly slams against her window during a powerful wind storm, she hears whispers in the darkness.
That bat is Nightwing, who persuades Esther to use her smarts and resourcefulness to drive the Soreyes from the Valle Abajo – the valley of her dreams.
Once she’s there, new dangers threaten and a mysterious presence lurks in the background as the saga of the Rio Grande Parallax continues, leading to a gut wrenching cliffhanger…
The adventure intensifies in Zero Visibility Possible, Book III, at a breakneck pace to the shocking conclusion of the Parallax series. Impossible odds face two groups of comrades who have traveled far seeking answers to mysteries. The first company heads for the Saddle of the Mountains of the Sky while the second, a hundred miles to the west on the barren Malpais, is led by Esther. Both groups face deadly enemies and startling enigmas.
Back in Rio Luna, Esther’s mysterious disappearance confounds her parents and her friend, Markey. In the Valle, though, questions surrounding Don are resolved. Meanwhile, the Soreyes heap new terrors on the clanspeople. Will the travelers return in time? Facing challenges far more insurmountable than bringing down the Tower of Il Serrohe, can the hapless clanspeople dare hope for freedom?
